Teaching Programme - Shanghai & Inner Mongolia
An opportunity to fully immerse yourself in two very different cultures, this will be the experience of a lifetime!Basic Information
This programme runs across two very different locations – a suburb of Shanghai and Bayannur in Inner Mongolia.
9th July – 13th July – Shanghai
14th July – 5th August – Bayannur, Inner Mongolia
Full board accommodation and local excursions are provided. Ambassadors should be advised that the standard of accommodation in the rural school (Bayannur, Inner Mongolia) relative to Shanghai (which is more typically western) will be more of a challenge (See Anna’s testimonial below).
July / August 2018
You will be provided TEFL training and onsite teaching supervision during the beginning of the programme. Then you will be teaching 7 -13 years old school children from less privileged families in both locations independently or with translation support depending on the situation. There will be some out of classroom teaching or activities as well. The key purpose is not only teaching English in a fun and relaxed environment but also raising the children’s interest in English and western culture, including lessons in Arts, Science and Sports in a fun and inclusive teaching setting.
TEFL Training
Successfully complete a 4 week period, and you can claim your Certificate – detailing your training and classroom teaching time.
Two Locations
A unique opportunity for anyone wanting to have an indepth understanding of China and the culture, combining an inner city experience with a very rural placement.
Flexibility
Due to the nature of the programme, there may be some flexibility as to start dates and follow on travel after the project is finished. Just let us know!
Doing GOOD
Reliant on limited public funding and donations, the schools are able to teach less privileged children who would otherwise not receive an education.
Schedule
Accommodation
Accommodation quality will differ vastly across the two different venues. Whilst in Shanghai the hotel will offer a more ‘westernised’ experience in terms of accommodation, the school residence where ambassadors will stay is much more basic. Some ambassadors may find this style of accommodation a challenge in itself, but should this be embraced and expected, we feel that ambassadors will find teaching children who may not have this access to international education incredibly rewarding.
Transport
- Arrival transfer from Shanghai Airport
- Transfer between Shanghai and Inner Mongolia
- Transfer from Inner Mongolia to Beijing or Shanghai (Ambassador choice depending on follow on travel plans)

See How Anna Described Her One Week in Shanxi
“The trip was tough and made me appreciate what I take for granted at home. Even though life over here is much more basic than in Shanghai people seem to be happy. This part of China really is still developing and I think it would be interesting to see what it will look like in 10 years time!”
